Welcome to ObjectWeb V2 Since its inception in January 2002, ObjectWeb a joint project between INRIA, Bull and France Telecom, has grown into a mature community spanning three continents. Just as biological ecosystems do, the ObjectWeb community has developed over time. It is now ready to support a fully-fledged independent open source organization. The initial thrust of the three co-founders who dedicated time, expertise and financial resources to the project quickly gained the support of open source activists from around the world. A continuous cycle of contribution and expanding benefits has resulted in a rich code base of over 100 projects backed by more than 5,000 developers from over 80 countries. The ObjectWeb business ecosystem did not happen overnight; much still remains to be done to take it to the next level. At ObjectWeb, we are committed to making available to everyone the best and most reliable open source software leveraging our position in middleware technology and to foster a vibrant community and business ecosystem. To support this goal, we are working on a brand new organization. This project is currently code-named ObjectWeb V2. FAQ The Transition Plan Transitioning ObjectWeb from V1 to V2 is to be a year-long endeavor. Our transition plan is structured into ten processes. It is pretty much under control with a good visibility on what has to be accomplished over the next months. | Process | Content | Comment | | 1. Project Management | Organize the transition plan and secure the support of ObjectWeb's founders. | Done. We wouldn't undertake such a complex task without full support of ObjectWeb's initial founders, would we? | | 2. Legal Matters | Bylaws, IPR Policy, Book of procedures, etc. | This takes so much time! We've set up a legal task force. Want to join? | | 3. Membership Development | Face-to-face meetings with prospective members. | We are communicating to large and small companies across the world about ObjectWeb V2 and gathering valuable feedback. | | 4. Activities | Evaluate current Projects and launch Initiatives. | Currently half a dozen Initiatives are in the works. Watch this space. | | 5. Brand and Communication | Brand evaluation. Trade shows, speaking engagements, etc. | Should we change the name? That is the question... | | 6. Technical platform | Web site, Forge, collaborative environment. | At some point the current platform will have to evolve. We'll be looking into this. | | 7. Community | V2 Web page, mailing list, Wiki, etc. | Now we have something to talk about, it's time to involve ObjectWeb's community in the transition to V2. We need a volunteer. | | 8. Collateral | Develop material, Case Studies. | A necessary touch of marketing so every one understands what ObjectWeb V2 is about. | | 9. Management Office | Organize permanent team, set-up HQ, etc. | We are very well supported by INRIA at the moment. We'll ramp this up when needed. | | 10. Financial | Budgeting and financial simulation | Will this fly? How much shall we spend? We update our financial simulation every week! | Highlights: Projects and Initiatives At ObjectWeb, everything starts with a Project. However we are conscious of the market requirement for easier integration; this is why we have introduced Initiatives in the ObjectWeb V2 plan. In a nutshell, Projects are technology driven whereas Initiatives are market driven. | Projects | | Initiatives | | Building on the basis of ObjectWeb V1, ObjectWeb V2 is fully committed to managing open source projects. ObjectWeb provides a "home" as well as a showcase to open source software projects. Project Management is a well-documented process with clear rules for project stages such as Proposal, Acceptation, Validation, Production, Maintenance and Termination. | | Initiatives are joint efforts aiming at providing an integration framework to help combine projects into solutions easily usable by companies outside the realm of ObjectWeb. Initiatives may generate their own specific business ecosystem and business opportunities. Initiatives have clear rules for Proposal, Acceptation, Validation, Management and Termination. | Task Force and Contacts - Cedric THOMAS, ObjectWeb V2 Task Force Lead
