Initiatives

Initiatives are joint efforts by ObjectWeb members aiming at facilitating the use of ObjectWeb technologies by mainstream Systems Integrators, End-Users and Software Vendors. Within an Initiative, ObjectWeb members work together to develop technical integration between projects and business synergies in order to address specific market needs. The technical outcome of an Initiative is not a product but a high-level component integrating several projects and providing a complex set of functionnalities upon which Systems Integrators, End-Users and Software Vendors can build business solutions. The business outcome of an Initiative is an ecosystem comprising technology providers, integrators and users characterized by the expertise to implement solutions built upon ObjectWeb technologies.

Object Web V2 should be launched with six Initiatives:

  • Service Oriented Initiative
  • Telco Initiative
  • E-Government Initiative
  • Business Intelligence Initiative
  • Embedded Software Initiative
  • ONESSI Initiative

Service Oriented Middleware Initiative

Based upon the current ESBi Initiative, the Service Oriented Middleware Initiative aims at building a complete SOA stack initially with technologies from ObjecWeb and Orientware. The objective is to put together ObjectWeb projects with other open source projects in an industrial class SOA-compliant package with associated use-cases and demonstrators.
Status: Incubation
Incubation Lead: EBM Websourcing and INRIA

Telco Initiative

A Telco Initiative has been in discussion for some time now at ObjectWeb. It is now supported by a initial draft from France Telecom. France Telecom has been joined by Alcatel. The objective of the Telco Initiative is to develop and promote open source software components, middleware software and platforms for telecommunication services.
Status: Incubation
Incubation Lead: Alcatel and France Telecom

E-Government Initiative

The e-Government Initiative targets the specific needs of high-volume processes to be implemented by modern administrations. E-Government is a critical IT domain where the open-source business model allows the dissemination of advanced technologies to very high numbers of users while maintaining under control the cost of access to these technologies. The objective is to help grow the number of innovative applications and added-value services available to the public by providing the basic set of technologies required by the producers of e-government innovations.
Status: Incubation
Incubation Leads: Thales, Bull and EBM Websourcing

Business Intelligence Initiative

The goal of the OW BI Initiative is to foster the growth of a business ecosystem in the Business Intelligence domain bringing business opportunities to new-class stakeholders. It aims at creating a new BI experience driven by end-users needs, supported by a new generation of BI infrastructure build up by new technologies, open source components and open standards, providing qualification, services, expertise. The BI initiative also aims at structuring open development activities around an open supply chain, contributing to the growth of alternative business and technology break-through drivers.
Status: Incubation
Incubation Lead: Engineering Ingegneria Informatica

Embedded Software Intiative

We are currently working on developing an Embedded Software Intiative. This is done on the basis of recent discussions with Dominique Potier (Thales), Chairman of the Working Group Innovation at the EU-funded ARTEMIS programme for Embedded Systems R&D in Europe" and with representatives from two initiatives to develop development tools for embedded software, TopcaseD and OpenMDD.
Status: Incubation
Incubation Lead: Artemis and Thales

ONESSI Initiative

This initiative aims at coordinating Open Source efforts in the European NESSI Program in order to maximize its impact. The first stage of this Initiative is to disseminate knowledge, to gather ideas and create opportunities, to increase adoption, to attract contributors. ONESSI is also paving the way to an open source Reference Implementation of the NESSI Framework. ONESSI will make sure that this RI is hosted by ObjectWeb and is reusing some of ObjectWeb components (and other Open Source components).
Status: Incubation
Incubation Lead: Bull
